Former captains Carl Hooper and Brian Lara shed tears after West Indies victory

Former captains Carl Hooper and Brian Lara couldn’t control their emotions and shed tears after West Indies’ historic Test win over Australia Down Under at the Gabba, Brisbane on Sunday. Young Shamar Joseph etched his name in history books and led the Windies team to a thrilling 8-run win over World Test Champions at their den.

Joseph showed some fighting spirit after getting retired hurt on Sunday when he was hit on the toe by Mitchell Starc as he returned to bowling and claimed Sunday as the West Indies bowled Australia out for 207, giving the West Indies their first win in Australia since 1997.

After the historic win, Hooper had hands on his head and tears in his eyes.

Lara, who was in the commentary box when the West Indies won the match, delivered an emotional speech while having tears in his eyes.

“This is unbelievable,” a teary Lara told Fox Cricket.

“Twenty-seven years to beat Australia. Young, inexperienced, written off – this West Indies team can stand tall today. West Indies cricket can stand tall.

“Today is a big day in West Indies cricket. Congratulations to every member of that cricket team. What a wonderful occasion.”

Former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, who was also present at the commentary box, hugged Lara.

Australia began the fourth day’s play at 60-2, chasing 216 for victory and with Steve Smith and Cameron Green at the crease, they were overwhelming favourites.

Opening bowlers Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph were not particularly threatening, so 45 minutes in captain Kraigg Brathwaite threw the ball to Joseph, with almost immediate results. The 24-year-old paceman didn’t dissapoint his skipper and produced a career-defining performance.

He dismissed Green when the Australian No.4 chopped on, then bowled Travis Head with a beautiful yorker, Head’s second first-ball duck of the match.

Australia, cruising at 113-2, were suddenly 113-4, although Smith looked unperturbed as he reached his half-century.

Joseph kept taking wickets at regular intervals with Smith fighting the lone battle. In the end, Smith remained unbeaten on 91 but Joseph castled Josh Hazlewood to seal the win for West Indies.
